SHIPPERS' PREFERENCES FOR TRUCKING SERVICES: AN APPLICATION OF THE ORDERED LOGIT MODEL
The ordered logit model is a refinement of the multinomial logit model. It is used when rank order data on preferences are available. The model was applied to a survey of bulk shippers who were asked to rank four service attributes: price, dependability, financial stability, and safety. Price was clearly preferred to dependability, and safety was clearly preferred to financial stability. However, these preferences were not as marked in the case of dry bulk shippers as opposed to shippers of liquids. Dry bulk shippers would be willing to pay rates 19 percent higher to insure on-time delivery, 22 percent higher for a more financially secure carrier, and 17 percent higher for an unquestioned safety program. The corresponding percentages for liquid shippers are 9, 11, and 17.
