KEEP RIGHT ON TO THE END OF THE ROAD
A study being sponsored by the Department of Transport is to examine the conversion of railway track into roadway. Although a previous study found that such conversion was generally impractical the study described is to be carried out on a closed railway line between Manchester and Sheffield through the Woodhead Tunnel. Previous examinations have indicated that such railway tunnels are too narrow to take two traffic lanes, and also that ventilation problems made conversion impractical. A separate study is also to be carried out into the possible conversion of a closed railway line in south London. The need for the additional studies is said to be the updating of the results of previous studies to independently assess the engineering possibilities of such projects. (Author/TRRL)
