NEW BUS MAINTENANCE FACILITY ON A LANDFILL AREA
In May of 1981, the Memphis Area Transit Authority moved into a new facility built on a 23 acre site which was formerly a sanitary landfill area. The design and construction presented special challenges to engineers and architects since it was on a deep sanitary landfill. To prepare the site for development, the entire top five feet of material was removed and replaced with five feet of new compacted fill. A pile-type foundation and structural slab were required to support the building. The decomposition of waste material in the sanitary landfill generates gases, the most objectionable of which is the highly explosive methane gas. This paper describes how the methane gas problem and other problems were solved to reclaim the land for productive use.
