There are about 2.9 M cars in Sweden at present. More than 30 makes in more than 300 models are on sale. Postal questionnaires were answered by almost 10000 car owners representing 19 makes and 47 models. Regular washing is essential to prevent corrosion. Mechanical washing is not entirely beneficial. Facilities for manual washing should be provided, especially for cars' undersides. Corrosion guarantees are unsatisfactory. Instead of being an advantage, they mean that after the 3-year guarantee period the retailer declines all responsibility. Claims are often refused because the owner missed the prescribed treatment by a month or two. For safety and fuel economy, regular maintenance is essential. The principal reason why owners do not adhere to prescribed maintenance schedule is the high prices and lack of confidence in maintenance workshops. Average annual cost of repair and service is sek 1700. Together with washing and corrosion prevention, it comes to sek 2000. Increasing numbers are doing their repairs themselves. Exhaust systems are still the principal cause of repairs. As they also constitute the main source of income to garages, no essential improvements are to be expected. Stainless steel systems have not yet found wide acceptance. (TRRL)
