Importance of the Marine Transportation System to the United States
This brief article highlights the importance of the marine transportation system (MTS) to the United States. The MTS plays a crucial economic role including handling $997 billion in imports and $516 billion in exports, contributing more than $500 billion to the country's gross domestic product (GDP), and sustaining more than 10 million jobs. In addition, the MTS provides national security support to the military and key supply chains depend on the MTS to to keep the economy functioning and support future growth. Challenges faced by the MTS include aging infrastructure, sea level rise, weather extremes, and changes in workforce and technology.
