RECENT ADVANCES IN LARGE SCALE TRAVEL SURVEYS

The two main aims of the Sydney travel survey were: (1) to provide a description of current travel behaviour (dramatic changes have occurred in travel conditions since the last survey in 1971), and (2) to collect data for policy analysis and short-term forecasting for transport decision-makers. The collection of these data was to be within the framework of a large scale travel survey of 20000 households located in an area covering approximately 12500 square kilometres and housing about 3 million people in just under one million dwellings. Details are given of the design of the survey, its implementation, main features and preliminary results. (TRRL)
