THE TEMPORAL STABILITY OF TRIP RATES: SOME FINDINGS AND IMPLICATIONS

As part of a research contract for the UK Department of Transport (DTP) to investigate the performance of the disaggregate model of car ownership calibrated in the regional highway traffic model (rhtm) project, the influence of several household variables on car ownership was examined. The effect of public transport level of service on car ownership was also considered. An analysis was undertaken of the effect of household variables on household bus trip rates. Data for the purpose were abstracted from the national travel surveys carried out periodically by the dtp. The method of analysis was to relate variation in trip rates to the household variables, each defined at a number of levels, by means of a generalised linear model. The most appropriate model was calibrated for each of three years and the change between years was analysed in terms of change in classification of households and in terms of the change in trip rates within classifications. On a separate contract for the dtp, the car and van driver trip end models calibrated during the rhtm project were re-examined, particularly with respect to temporal stability and the influence of fuel prices on trip rates.
