URBAN SUBSURFACE USE IN JAPAN

In addition to tunnels built for railways and highways in mountainous areas, subsurface uses in urban areas have increased in Japan since the commencement of modernisation in 1868. These have included transport facilities, railways, highways and parking areas. This short article presents details of such uses existing at the present, with plans for extending subsurface transport in the future. Mention is made of possible mini tunnels to meet traffic demand and reduce costs. Extensions to expressways will include sections through tunnels and further underground car parks will be built. Information is included on the location of public utilities underground and the storage of lng, lpg and petroleum. (TRRL)
