TWENTY YEARS OF INNOVATION IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT

TWINTIG JAAR INNOVATIE IN HET OPENBAAR VERVOER

Twenty years of innovation in public transport in different countries are described. The improvement of public transport led to the construction of new systems, such as bus lanes and new transport modes such as personal rapid transit, dial-a-ride. After the energy crisis new ideas were born. Automatic public transport systems were studied; today, dial-a-ride is the most applied new system. Starting points were product, function, market and research and development. Innovation from 1960-1970 automatic systems arose from function and research and development. The second innovation wave arose from product. It concerns novelties, product improvement or the bringing together of existing systems. (TRRL)
