SHOULD PEDESTRIANS MAKE WAY FOR BUSES?
London Transport suggests that the exclusion of buses from shopping streets was in the interest of neither the passengers nor the public transport system itself. It involved a longer walk, longer journeys, increased mileage and increased operating costs resulting in a decline in traffic and revenue. Results from some studies supporting this suggestion are outlined and it is generally agreed that in shopping areas, the access to buses should be at least as good as that to car parks. Buses could be routed across a shopping street or they could be allowed to run along the edge. London Transport estimates that proposed pedestrian only schemes in London could, if implemented, cause an increase in losses of L1M per year. A set of guidelines is proposed to enable bus routes to be as direct as possible with stops located close to passenger destinations. Pedestrians' access to shops should be as direct as possible.
