A TECHNICAL REVIEW OF SULPHUR-ASPHALT TECHNOLOGY

Substantial progress has been made since the early 1970's in the development of a commercially-attractive technology for using sulphure in asphalt paving mixtures. The technology, as presented here, is the result of an extensive laboratory and field program conducted over the last decade by Gulf Canada limited with the excellent cooperation of the University of Waterloo and various highway departments across Canada and the United States. The sulphur-asphalt (sa) technology is now accepted by user agencies across North American and around the world and is readily available for commercial application. This paper reviews the highlights of the sa technology as developed by Gulf Canada limited with financial support from the Sulphur Development Institute of Canada. Material technology, i.e. sa binder characteristics, sa pavement mix characteristics, commercial production and quality assurance, design technology, field experience, in-service performance, recycling, economic considerations and environmental aspects are all discussed.
