ANALYSIS OF CONE PENETROMETER DATA
A field investigation consisting of five conventional soil borings to depths ranging from 50 to 214 feet and 77 cone penetrometer soundings to depths ranging from 40 to 221 feet was conducted at a tailings dam, near Miami, Arizona. Samples were obtained from the conventional borings using both a thinwalled piston sampler and a split spoon sampler driven in accordance with the requirements for the Standard Penetration Test. A laboratory testing program consisting of grain size, Atterberg limits, moisture content, dry density and direct shear tests was carried out. The cone penetrometer data was correlated with laboratory test results. This paper presents a correlation of the Cone Penetrometer Test results with the results of the direct shear tests. (Author)
