REMEDIAL REPAIRS ON M40

Repair works being carried out to correct settlements of 20-30mm, suffered by some unreinforced concrete slabs on the M40, are described. The repair technique uses the BALVAC process which uses a lifting frame positioned across the defective carriageway lane. After saw cutting the longitudinal joints of the affected sections, holes are drilled through the 250mm thick slabs to provide locations for the lifting frame. With the frame in position, pumps are then used to hydraulically lift four 20k jacks located at the corners of the frame and subsequently to raise the section 2-3mm above datum levels to allow for settlement. Groundwater is then flushed out from the void created under the slab and is replaced by a dry cement mortar mix instead of a more costly resin mix. The use of a dry mix eliminates the settling time required by resins and so allows a road section to be reopened after 30 mins if really necessary. (TRRL)
