THE POTENTIAL USE OF A DEGRADABLE EROSION CONTROL MEMBRANE IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

The use of a polyester mesh membrane with paper strip inserts for the enhancement of grass growth on erosion-susceptible slopes is described. Trials conducted in the United Kingdom are briefly described. The membrane shields soil and seed from raindrop impact, minimizing runoff water. When seeds germinate they grow through gaps in the fabric and achieve all-over cover as the paper strips begin to degrade. It is important that the membrane should remain in contact with the ground so that the paper can rot as the vegetation begins to grow. Difficulty was experienced in unusually dry weather. Overall trial results indicate that with the variable climatic conditions found in the UK a lighter weight version of the membrane will be required. (TRRL)
