EVALUATION OF A NEW METHOD FOR LANE REDUCTION AT ROAD WORKS ON MOTOR ROADS

EFFEKTMAETNING AV NY METOD FOER KOERFAELTSREDUKTION VID VAEGARBETE PAA MOTORVAEGAR

A new principle for the marking of road works on highways has been tested at a road working place on the highway near Mjolby. According to the new principle all vehicles are first guided into the right driving lane before the passage of the road working place, irrespective of its position on the right or the left side of the driving direction. Measurements of the passage for about 1 000 light vehicles at different designs (new and existing principle) expose decelerations of up to 20 km/h when using the new principle compared with the existing one. At the same time generally lower passage speeds of the working place can be noticed when workers are visible (up to 10 km/h) but also general tendencies of accelerations of the same size when passing the working place. The use of a section changing board at the marking before the road work probably contributes to an earlier change of lane even if 60 per cent of the necessary lane changes take place at a shorter distance than 225 M from the road work on the place where the strongest braking occurs.
