Trains, Planes, and Automobiles: Transportation Noise in the United States
This article surveys the soundscape of transportation noise in the United States, an issue which will continue to have a significant impact for the foreseeable future. In particular, the modes of rail, aviation and highway are addressed. Research on the reduction of noise emanating from these modes is reviewed here, including the efforts of government agencies. New technology, such as high speed rail, automated vehicles, drones, and advanced air mobility are also considered, in terms of current research and impacts.
