TANDEM TOLL COLLECTION SYSTEM RELIEVES CONGESTION AT TOLL GATES
The use of tandem toll lanes, where vehicles can pay tolls at either of two toll booths as indicated on automatically controlled signs, can increase the capacity of toll plazas without adding lanes or widening the facility. The tandem toll booths are situated one after the other on the same lane. Installation of tandem toll booths can increase the capacity of a toll lane by up to 40 percent, according to consulting engineer Louis Rubenstein, who says, "Tandem toll booths are most effective when used with automatic processing equipment or during peak hours or on peak days to provide supplemental capacity. They avoid the need for reconstruction of toll plazas, and long queues of irritated motorists at peak times. By proper scheduling of operator shifts or use of manual and automated lanes in tandem, increases in operator costs can be minimized. Tandem toll booths make feasible the use of dollar bill acceptors and magnetically encoded insertion ticket processing equipment in the toll lane. This automated equipment is too slow in single units to be of value. However, in tandem their processing rates are satisfactory. Tandem toll booths may be the most feasible solution at many toll facilities within the next several years as toll fees continue to climb and vehicle processing rates decrease. (Author)
