COMPETITION RESHAPING FUTURE FOR U.S. RAIL/BUS INDUSTRY

As U.S. buyers turn increasingly to non-U.S. builders for transit buses and rail vehicles, the remaining domestic builders are confronted with declining market share--or no market at all. Only the Budd Company now survives as the domestic prime contractor for rail cars; the three major domestic bus builders had only a 37% share of orders placed for buses in the first half of 1982. Discussed are the effects of UMTA and transit industry standards on domestic buses, the characteristics of foreign-built buses, the impact of foreign government subsidies on the competitiveness of their transit vehicle producers, and purchasing practices in the U.S. which have effects on the sources of equipment. The demise of almost all U.S. transit car builders is discussed; there are predictions about the future course for both transit car and bus builders in the U.S.
