PRESENT SITUATION OF WELDING IN JNR

In Japan, in addition to the JNR there are fourteen major private railways, seven subway lines, and several other transportation lines. With regard to the manufacturers of railway rolling stock, there are approximately ten companies. The welding techniques for railways are being studied by the rolling stock makers, the construction companies making steel structures, and the makers of electric machinery, but as for welding for the railways, the JNR is playing the central role. The present welding situation and the results of research, focusing mainly on the welding of the rails, as it is seen now at JNR is described.
