ON THE MEASUREMENT OF SURFACE TEMPERATURES IN FIRE DIVISIONS

SULRILEVAMENTO DELLE TEMPERATURES SUPERFICIALI DELLE DIVISIONI TAGLIAFUOCO

The most usual divisions for passive fire protection in shipbuilding consist generally of metallic structures lined either on one or on both faces by insulating materials proportioned, in thickness, to the degree of insulation to be obtained (Class A), or they may consist of free standing panels made of asbestos-cement materials or of other materials properly bonded (Class B). The conditions of heat transfer between thermo-element and surface under examination affect, sometimes quite considerably, the temperature established in the thermocouple in conditions of equilibrium. For this reason, it was decided to determine whether a given type of thermocouple is capable of supplying temperature indications independent of the nature of the surface on which the same thermocouple is applied. Together with the thermocouple itself, any fitting employed for its application to the surface is obviously to be considered. For the purposes of this study, the problem of fast response is not a matter of primary importance since the temperature gradients that normally occur have rather modest values. Their sign inversions are of no concern and, therefore, the problem of measurements in cyclicity conditions is not examined. Thus, this study is essentially devoted to: a) suitability of a given type of thermocouple to supply the true temperature of a given material's surface; and b) method of application of the thermocouples, in order to be able to carry out steady measurements during the whole of the heating cycle of concern.
