BRITISH RAIL PREPARES INCREASED CAPITAL SPENDING
Pressure from environmental lobbies and the oil shortage forced the government to announce in November a big increase in rail investment at the expense of urban road building. Subsequent cutbacks in public spending have jeopardised these good intentions, but the author examines the ways in which BR intends to spend its new-found wealth and indicates the areas where pressure will be applied for additional investment over and above the 1000 million English Pounds budgeted for 1974-78.
