EXTENSIONS TO THE TYNE AND WEAR METRO. PART 1
The "reserved track" metro system has promise in keeping down public transport costs. Tyne and Wear council does not want to allow development to take place which would prevent extensions. The article examines the future for extension to the metro system. Some 16 possible extensions were examined in terms of their feasibility, costs, operational characteristics, and potential patronage. Five extensions were selected as being worthy of further study; each are considered and their levels of priority are established. A transportation model for the county was developed to enable the total transport system to be assessed as part of the structure plan preparation. The possible impact of the metro was assessed, in the light of modal split, to comprise mainly the diversion of existing bus trips to metro with consequent public transport operational savings. The analysis of metro extension proposals showed the critical importance of construction costs; it was clear that the larger extensions could not be justified on existing demands alone unless cheaper forms of construction could be used. Three schemes were selected to be protected from developments which could prevent further implementation. These were of low capital cost and had low "blighting" effects. Provision was also provided in the structure plan for the building of new stations on the committed system where the additional custom generated by an extension justified expense.
