ACCIDENTS TO TRAM PATRONS

The number of reported accidents to tram patrons while boarding or alighting from trams or crossing to/from the kerb is not large compared to the total number of reported accidents but it appears to be a growing problem and like all foot-traveller accidents the severity is high. With an emphasis for the use of public transport, the safety of tram patrons should receive some concerned interest. Despite a drop in passenger journeys of about 7 per cent between 1973/74 and 1977/78, the number of accident-types under study more than doubled over the same period. The accidents were examined with reference to patron movement, with and without safety zones, and by light condition. The age of patrons in accidents was examined in relation to patronage survey information and the relative hazard for various age groups determined. The temporal factors involved in the accidents were also compared to the patronage survey to ascertain the most hazardous times/days etc. Field surveys were made of a selected number of tram routes to examine illegal parking on tram stops at various times of the day to provide some comparison of the conditions on routes with the greatest number of accidents. Recommendations are made to improve the safety of tram patrons (a). The number of the covering abstract of the conference is TRIS no. 368448. (TRRL)
