NAVYFLUX Y-THRUSTER FOR THE "CHARTRES"
A bow thruster unit which utilizes new design principles, and which has a single intake in the nose of the ship's bulbous bow and two side discharge openings, is described. This unit, called a Y-thruster, develops an increase in efficiency with rising ship speed, as opposed to conventional thrusters, which lose efficiency at higher ship speeds. This capability improves the ship's maneuverability, and it can also act as a brake in an emergency. Components of the system, including the axial-flow pump and the horizontally hinged discharge port shutters, are also briefly described. Graphs showing the superiority of the Y-thruster over transverse bow thrusters are included in the article.
