STRIP THEORY AND POWER SPECTRAL DENSITY FUNCTION APPLICATION TO THE STUDY OF SHIP GEOMETRY AND WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION INFLUENCE ON WAVE BENDING MOMENT

APPLICAZIONE DELLA TEORIA DEL FLUSSO BIDIMENSIONALE E DELLA FUNZIONE DESNITA' SPETTRALE DI POTENZA ALLO STUDIO DELL'INFLUENZA DELLA GEOMETRICA DI CARENA E DELLA DISTRIBUZIONE DEI PESI SUL MOMENTO FLETTENTE D'ONDA

Research is described which was carried out by means of an electronic computer to detect which parameters affect the wave bending moment of a ship and thereafter to evaluate their quantitative influence. The present research has importance especially for bulk carriers and tankers for which there is a trend to larger sizes and for which the influence of certain parameters, weight distribution for instance, may be of paramount importance from the point of view of the longitudinal strength in confused seas. The work is based upon the theory of Korvin-Kroukovsky and the absolute values obtained for bending moment are comprised between the accuracy limits of this theory, which can be deemed sufficient in most practical cases. However, at least from a qualitative point of view, the parameters identification remain valid, as well as the exclusion of the influence of other parameters which have also been taken into consideration. The results of the work are reported in the first part while in the second, the procedure adopted and the justification of the assumptions made are given in detail. In the third part, the formulae are given in the form used for the calculation, slightly modified in respect to the original ones of Korvin-Kroukovsky with the purpose of simplifying the numeric evaluation of certain quantities.
