ROAD TRANSPORT - OUR OPPORTUNITIES

The need of transport infrastructures and the demand for passenger transport in developing countries indicate that the bus industry should aim at world markets. The requirements of British and overseas bus operating industries for financial and social benefits are considered. Based on these requirements, firstly an analysis of operating costs shows the high cost of bus maintenance, and two possible process innovations - computer-aided design and integrated condition and performance checks - are suggested for maintenance cost reduction. Secondly, possible developments in bus industry products which are discussed cover power units, transmissions, suspensions, heating and ventilation systems, vehicle structures, electrical equipment, articulated vehicles, human factors affecting design, and fare collection equipment. The need for bus manufacturers to exploit technology and social change for the survival of the industry is emphasized. (TRRL)
