SURFACE EFFECT SHIPS IN THE SURFACE NAVY
The U.S. Navy presently has two testcraft, designed as "proof of principle" articles, to be used in the development of Naval surface effect ships. These craft are described, with attention given to general hull configuration, propulsion system and associated problems, stability and control, aerodynamic drag, and steering systems and concepts of each craft. Characteristics of surface effect ships that make them attractive for Naval use are discussed. The author also discusses the effect that an entire Navy of surface effect ships would have on Navy yards, drydocking facilities, and sea going billets for Naval personnel.
