SEMI-SUBMERGED AIR CUSHION VEHICLE (SSACV)
A concept for a semi-submerged air cushion vehicle (SSACV), is presented. This composite type of vehicle takes advantage of the high speed capability of an air cushion vehicle, and combines with this the inherent stability and course-keeping of a pair of submerged hulls. The hard structure of an ACV of the conventional type is supported well above the water surface by a pair of long, thin, streamlined struts along the sides of the craft which carry at the lower end a pair of torpedo-shaped hulls immersed will below the water surface. Some main features of the SSACV, such as lower power requirements and directional stability and course-keeping ability, are discussed, and the author believes that the principal merit of a vehicle of this type is its ability to give a smooth ride in heavy seas.
