TBM PLUS BENTONITE FACE UP TO 2KM TUNNEL JACKING JOB IN IPSWICH

Tunnel jacking methods of sewer tunnel construction, in which a tunnel boring machine (tbm) was used in conjunction with a pipe jacking system for the construction of the Ipswich SE area drainage schemes, are described. The 2.1km of sewer tunnel was constructed with cover ranging from 2.7--12M in varying density sand. In the sequence of operations hydraulic rams advance the tbm ahead of the pipeline to full stroke with the excavated tunnel surface being supported by a specially designed front pipe. A 2.5M pipe length is then lowered into the shaft and pushed to close the lead pipe back into the tbm so allowing spoil removal to continue. To lubricate the movement of the pipeline, bentonite is injected under pressure to ensure ground support and to enable long-distance jacking to take place without the use of intermediate jacking stations.
