THE USE OF COMBUSTIBLE MATERIALS IN SHIPBUILDING; SOME NOTES FOR THE FORMULATION OF CRITERIA AND METHODS OF CLASSIFICATION FOR COMBUSTIBLE MATERIALS TO THEIR "REACTION TO FIRE"

The problem of selecting for acceptance combustible materials intended to be used in shipbuilding is becoming increasingly important, due to the widening of the range of available materials. This fact depends on both the production of new synthetic materials and the application of protective procedures, ignifugation processes, on conventional materials. The latest investigations carried out by ISO TC 92 came to the conclusion that it is practically impossible to establish valid correlations among the classes of materials as outlined by the rules presently in force in different countries. Both ISO and IMCO, therefore, asked their own "ad hoc" Working Groups to continue the collection and analysis of any formations available on the methods employed in the various countries in order to be able to indicate a standardized test procedure and, by consequence, a widely accepted classification. At present, substantial literature is available on this subject; it can thereby be recognized that both the classification criteria and related testing procedures employed by the specialized laboratories rarely have some point of coincidence. The present paper is a report on the work carried out at the R.I.NA. Fire Research Laboratory in order to formulate a set of rules for the classification of combustible materials according to the risk involved in case of fire. The results of systematic research on the behaviour of a number of materials currently used in shipbuilding will be reported in a forthcoming paper. In English, Italian preface.
