ESTIMATION OF CUMULATIVE STANDARD AXLES FOR PAVEMENT DESIGN AND STRUCTURAL MAINTENANCE

For the design of new roads information is required on the weights and numbers of commercial vehicles that will use the road during its design life. For the purpose of structural maintenance similar data are required for both past and future traffic. Often, there is no specific information. The paper describes the general sources of data that are available on past traffic and illustrates by an example the manner in which the designer may use them to make estimates of past and future traffic at a particular location. Careful interpretation and application of the data gives predicitons that should usually provide adequate guidance on the total numbers of standard axles to be expected. However, local axle weight surveys accompanied by a simultaneous classified vehicle count will often be justified, particularly for the purposes of structural maintenance.
