TRAFFIC ENGINEERING, ITS HISTORY AND FUTURE
VERKEERSTECHNIEK, HISTORIE EN TOEKOMST
The development of traffic engineering from the beginning of motorized traffic is indicated. There has been research on traffic flow for 50 to 70 years. It is mainly mathematical and hardly applied. In the near future this research must become more applicable, and applied to make traffic flow part of general planning in rural and urban areas. Only one aspect is described here, the behaviour of the vehicle/driver combination as part of a physical stream. For the covering abstract see TRIS abstract No. 368574. (TRRL)
