CONTAINERIZED TURKEY SHIPPING "CUTS ITS TEETH"

Transporting and handling containerized turkey shipments for export helps reduce loss and damage to boxes, packages and product and reduces port transfer time. That's what a USDA study indicates in a comparison of containerized turkey shipments with the normal break-bulk shipping method. Both shipments originated in Raeford, N. C. Both were destined for Milan, Italy. The van container shipment arrived in Milan in excellent condition. The break-bulk shipment arrived in very poor condition, with about 90 percent of the turkey boxes damaged. Temperatures were more uniform during transit in the van container shipment but transportation charges were 1/2 cent per pound higher than in the break-bulk shipment. Advantages of containerized shipments include savings in packaging, strapping and stenciling costs.
