LIMITATION OF ACCESS ONTO ARTERIAL ROADS

The problem of a reduction in the level of service of an arterial road caused by the proliferation of accesses is highlighted and the historical and legal aspects of highways briefly explained. The need for and the manner by which accesses may be controlled is discussed. Special mention is made of planning and statute control of accesses together with the implications of each. Reference is made to the procedures used in Tasmania and the inadequacies seen to exist in obtaining the most effective least cost solution. The need to tackle the problem of access control by an integrated approach between planners and engineers is emphasised (a). The number of the covering abstract of the conference is TRIS No. 368448.
