EVALUATION OF A REDUCED STRUCTURE IN THE INSIDE LANE OF A FOUR LANE ROADWAY
This study was conducted to evaluate the performance of a reduced pavement structure on the inside passing lane of a four-lane roadway because of the reduced number of accumulated standard axle loads. The reduced pavement section was constructed by substituting aggregate base for part of the bituminous base to give a reduced structural number. A stepped subgrade section with a reduced Full-Depth design was also constructed. The findings indicate that reduced left lanes can be constructed on four-lane roadways with significant savings both in dollars and in conservation of bitumen. (FHWA)
