NCSS--THE ANALYST'S COMPANION. A DESCRIPTION OF THE NATIONAL CRASH SEVERITY STUDY STATISTICAL DATA FILE
This report describes the National Crash Severity Study (NCSS) statistical data file. It is intended to be an aid for the statistician and data analyst in the use and interpretation of this data file of 12,050 traffic accidents. These data were collected by seven field teams under contract to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, from accidents which occurred during the period January 1977 through March 1979. This document collects and organizes information specific to the NCSS file. The investigator's coding manuals and the experiences and working knowledge of the staff of the National Center for Statistics and Analysis are among the most important sources of this information. For information beyond the scope of this work, an extensive list of references is is supplied. The NCSS file is the best currently-available source of information on the interrelationship of vehicle crash characteristics and the resultant occupant injuries in towaway accidents. This work documents what the analyst needs to know in order to use it.
