THE LOADING MANUAL
The 1966 International Convention on Load Lines and Registro Italiano Navale "Rules for Building and Classification of Ships" require that "the master of every ship be supplied with sufficient information to enable him to arrange for the loading and ballasting of his ship in such a way as to avoid the creation of any unacceptable stress in the ships structure". Obviously (with the only exception of special ships intended for the carriage of particular cargoes, which can be loaded only in a limited number of standard conditions that can be easily foreseen) it would be extremely timeconsuming to calculate the longitudinal stresses corresponding to every possible loading condition. It is preferable that the master be supplied with a rapid method of calculating the conventional stresses which can arise in the ship in whatever loading condition when sailing in still water. The method proposed in the present paper quickly furnishes shear forces and still water bending moments at some ship's transverse sections for whatever loading condition, taking as a basis the longitudinal stresses calculations accurately carried out for a few loading conditions to be assumed as reference conditions.
