An integrated transport and economic equilibrium model for autonomous transportation systems considering parking behavior

The authors investigated how the travel behavior and parking maneuvers of autonomous vehicles (AVs) could lead to negative social and economic effects, which previous studies have not noticed. To study traffic performance and economic and social impacts in an AV environment, the authors developed an integrated transportation and economic equilibrium model consisting of proposed autonomous traffic equilibrium and equilibrium submodels. A case study on Sydney, Australia showed that AV parking patterns can cause traffic conditions to deteriorate, causing greater travel time costs, with significant social impacts. In addition, the negative effects of AV travel behavior would increase with population growth.
