STUDY OF THE EFFECT OF POLYMERIC ADDITIVES ON THE HYDRODYNAMICS AND HEAT TRANSFER OF TURBULENT FLOWS
Experiments are described for gaining a deeper insight into the results and mechanism of adding polymeric materials for reducing fluid friction and the heat transfer rate. It was found that increasing the concentration of additives reduces these two quantities up to some maximum and then the trend is reversed. It was determined that this effect also prevails in fluids other than water. The results of experiments do not contradict the hypothesis put forward earlier by others on the mechanism of friction reduction by adding polymers. It seems acceptable to attribute this reduction to diminution of transverse flow fluctuations.
