THE BEHAVIOUR OF SHIPS IN CONFUSED SEA; THE LONGITUDINAL WAVE BENDING MOMENT
IL COMPORTAMENTO DELLE NAVI IN MARE TEMPESTOSO; MOMENTO FLETTENTE LONGITUDINALE DOVUTO AL MOTO ONDOSO
Results of a systematic calculation on the behaviour of ships in confused area are presented. This calculation is based upon theories introduced in technical bulletins number 4 and 7 of Registro Italiano Navale. By means of the power spectral density function method and superposition, the highest expected wave bending moment in 10,000 cycles is found for a ship crossing with head sea, a fetch of short-crested irregular sea (wind speed = 60 knots). Ship characteristics are systematically varied to determine their influence on the wave bending moment. The calculation procedure, suggested by Webb Institute of Naval Architecture, was adapted for use on an electronic computer. The FORTRAN program is provided in Appendix 2. In Italian
