PNEUMATIC CONTROL ELEMENTS FOR MARINE APPLICATIONS
A system of pneumatic circuits for the automatic control of ship power plants has been recently developed and is described. The pneumatic elements can be used to make up a system which consists of a digital part, including a data processor, input and output units, and final control units; and an analogue part, which comprises angular position converters, pressure transmitters, analogue counting units and position piston cylinders. Two examples of control systems are included in the article, one for a four engine, two shaft system, and the other for a two engine, two controllable-pitch propellers system. A description and explanation of the various operations that the control systems control, for each type of propulsion system, is also given, with operations such as engine start, engine power and transmission ratio control, and hydrodynamic clutch engagement all described.
