SIMBULK--A CHARTERING INFORMATION PROCESSING SYSTEM
This paper covers in some detail an information processing system, named SIMBULK, for the chartering and operations departments of shipping companies. The system has a modular structure, with the voyage estimate module as the central part of the system. This is because most of the data is entered by means of voyage estimates and voyage performance. The data is later used to make reports of various kinds, and as a basis for new calculations. This information system has evolved into a modular planning and controlling system for the chartering and operations departments, with the basic objective of improving the information flow within the shipping firm, improvement of the basis for decision making, and improving the control of the firm's total activity. By improving these aspects, it is hoped that the competitiveness of the firm will increase. The basic modules which form the system are also given, with the function, and a descriptive explanation, of each module included.
