DIESEL SPECIFIC POWER OUTPUT--HOW FAR CAN WE GO?
Power outputs of diesel engines have increased at a phenomenal rate over the last 25 years. The largest single contributor to this increased output has been the higher mean effective pressures, which over the same time period have almost tripled. This article describes research which is being performed to find further power increases for diesels. Three factors must be considered in this search, namely the performance limitation of the turbochargers, the maximum combustion pressures compatible with component design, and the thermal stresses evolved in the cylinder head. The research described in the article deals with increasing the power output through the reduction of the engine's compression ratio. Results achieved from testing, including problems encountered and engine modifications that were performed, are included.
