EVALUATION OF SECOND EISENHOWER TUNNEL INSTRUMENTATION RESULTS
The results of programs conducted by the Colorado Department of Highways and U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to measure strains and convergence of steel ribs in the top heading and bench excavation and to measure pressures on concreted drifts in the multi-drift excavation for the Second Eisenhower Tunnel (I70) are reviewed. Three instrumented ribs out of a total of 45 ribs were selected for detailed study. Significant behavior of the support system was measured by the instrumentation and results correlated well with ground conditions and construction details. Information from other sections not reviewed may produce useful information when analyzed in detail. Recommendations are made for reducing the data and assessing potential instrument errors. Further studies of the data should consider time-rate of buildup of stress and deformation in the lining and the influence of ground and support conditions on moments in the ribs. Future studies that summarize significant aspects of the tunnel performance, both from the instrumentation data and from general observations would be of significant benefit. Factors that should be emphasized in future tunnel instrumentation programs are discussed. (FHWA)
