PREVENTION OF SPILLAGE AT MONO-MOORING TERMINALS
A review of single-point mooring systems, with special consideration given to the flexible, floating hoses as a weak link in the prevention of pollution from these buoys, is presented. The performance of these hoses is examined, with examples of hose failures cited. Possible causes for the floating hose failures, such as ineffective hose design and outmoded hose standards, are discussed. New hose materials, with advantages in weight savings, abrasion resistance, and recovery from kinking and crushing, are discussed. Among these materials are polyurethane and glass reinforced plastics. Further discussions include cases for mechanized hose fabrication, independent hose inspection and testing, and anti-pollution/safety equipment installed on the hose.
