RESEARCH DATA ON THE FRACTURE PROPERTIES OF WROUGHT IRON
Following the investigation of the failure of a wrought iron bridge on the Irish State Railway in 1976, the condition of the Clifton suspension bridge was examined, particularly in relation to the eye-bar chains. The test programme set up for this investigation comprised: residual stress measurements, determination of fracture toughness, chemical composition, results of charpy tests, crack growth rates, and calculation of stress intensity factors in the chain link eye. This report gives the results of the tests and measurements performed. (TRRL)
