PLACEMENT OF A SEA PAVEMENT USING ELEMENT SULFUR
A sulfur-extended asphalt (SEA) pavement using molten elemental sulfur "Flower of sulfur" was placed in a commuter parking lot. This report is devoted to the design, mixing, and placement of the SEA material. Problems associated with temperature-maintenance of the liquid sulfur from holding tank to mixing drum are outlined in detail. The appearance and color of the mix were virtually identical to those of a conventional ConnDOT Class I. Measurements indicated insignificant emissions of noxious gases at both the plant and paver. The service life of the SEA pavement will ultimately determine the cost effectiveness of the further use of this material in ConnDOT construction and maintenance activities. (FHWA)
