An Examination of the Legal Marijuana Use Age and Its Enforcement in California, a State Where Recreational Marijuana is Legal

Recreational use of marijuana for adults aged 21 and older is legal in 15 States and the District of Columbia. According to a survey of California law enforcement agency representatives enforcing minimum legal marijuana use age of 21 (MLMU-21) laws at recreational marijuana outlets depends mainly on the retail store. This study assessed compliance with MLMU-21 laws by sending pseudo-underage patrons to 50 licensed retail recreational marijuana outlets in California to attempt access without showing age identification. The results were that at every outlet the study patrons, who looked younger than 21, were required to show ID and not admitted without showing their age identification. Further research is needed to address fake IDs and compliance with MLMU-21 laws at illicit outlets.
