PLOUGHING WITH LORRIES
LASTBILSPLOGNING
This report presents comparisons between road stretches which have been snowploughed with ploughs equipped with cogged or flat bills. The following positive factors have been obtained when using cogged bills: (1) higher friction, which means a reduction of the braking distance by 10%, (2) better ploughing of wheel tracks, (3) better holding for the plough-vehicle, which means a decrease of the need of protection against skidding, and (4) better results with wet snow and during ongoing snowfall. The negative factors with cogged bills are: (1) can cause more damage than a flat bill on paved roads, and (2) it is more expensive. The results and experiences of the tests show that it can be advantageous to use cogged bills, under certain circumstances. (TRRL)
