ENVIRONMENTAL HYGIENE IN TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SCHEMES. A LITERATURE REVIEW
MILIEUHYGIENE IN VERKEERSCIRCULATIEPLANNEN. EEN LITERATUURSTUDIE
The traffic and transport problems of today are mostly caused by increasing vehicle ownership and vehicle use. The heart of the problem lies largely in the use of public space by the car, the increase of hazards for slow traffic and the increase of environmental pollution. These problems are greatest in the cities because of the high concentration of vehicles in the scarce available space. The traffic function often hinders other urban functions such as living, shopping, etc. The negative influence of the traffic and transport system on the environment in urban areas is increasingly being considered. Therefore there is a need to get as good an equilibrium as possible between accessibility for traffic and environmental hygiene when planning new traffic and transport systems. The environmental and hygienic aspects of a number of traffic management schemes in small, medium sized and big cities are considered. (TRRL)
